One of the key accused in the drug haul case from Zirakpur allegedly attempted suicide, even as Punjab Police maintained that no decision has been taken yet on summoning boxer Vijender Singh after the Olympic medallist's name cropped up.
"The key accused Anup Singh Kahlon attempted suicide. He took out a wire from the bucket used for bathing and tried to slit his wrist with it, but he is out of danger," Fatehgarh Sahib's Senior Superintendent of Police, H S Mann said today.

Forensic expert concludes the three girls weren't raped, contradicts post-mortem report
NDTV: The forensic expert looking into the death of three minor sisters from Bhandara in Maharashtra has reportedly concluded that the girls died of drowning and were not raped, as stated in their post-mortem report.
The forensic expert has said that as per his investigation, the girls bore no external injuries on their bodies and their clothes and jewelry etc were intact. He has also said that tests prove there were no signs of poisoning or strangulation.
Chennai-based students on indefinite fast on Tamils issue
Eight students of a city-based college have embarked on a fast-unto-death here demanding action against Sri Lanka for alleged war crimes.
The students of Loyola College here began their fast yesterday to press for their seven-point charter of demands, including an independent probe against Colombo for alleged war crimes, referendum on Tamil Eelam (separate homeland for Tamils) and slapping economic sanctions on Sri Lanka, a protester Joe Britto said.

Boxer Vijender Singh had met alleged drug dealer a few times
Boxer Vijender Singh and his friend Ram Singh had met alleged drug smuggler Anup Singh Kahlon a few times, sources have revealed. Yesterday, Vijender Singh's wife's car had been recovered from outside Anup Singh's house, NDTV reports.
Ram Singh has reportedly said that he, along with Vijender, met Anup Singh at least 4 times since December, sources said.
Thousands of policemen, snipers to guard Pak PM
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf will spend about five hours in Jaipur along with his family members before heading to the shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer on Saturday.
The Ajmer district administration has deployed more than 1,000 policemen in and around the shrine.
The Jaipur police have also made adequate arrangements for security of Ashraf at Hotel Rambagh Palace where he will stay for five hours and have lunch with Indian Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid.
Afghanistan: Suicide bomb attack outside defence ministry as US defense chief visits
Afghan officials say there was an explosion outside the Afghan defense ministry causing multiple casualties, as US defense secretary Chuck Hagel visits the country. Afghan police spokesman Hashmat Stanekzai says an apparent suicide attacker on a bicycle hit the main entrance to the defense ministry around 9 am local time.
Officials are still trying to determine the number of casualties. Hagel was in a meeting at a coalition facility in Kabul and defense officials say he is in a safe location and unharmed.
No clean chit yet to Olympian Vijender Singh in Rs 130 crore drug bust in Mohali: Police
CNN-IBN reports: Olympic bronze medalist Vijender Singh is under the police scrutiny in the drug haul in Mohali and police said that the interrogation so far establishes no direct link to him but hasn't given him the clean chit either. Twenty six kilograms of heroin worth Rs 130 crore was recovered from a house in Zirakpur, outside Chandigarh.
Police sources, however, said that accused Anup Singh Kahlon in a shocking claim revealed that two of his clients were Olympic medalist and sporting icon Vijender Singh and another boxer Ram Singh.

A man was arrested for allegedly twice raping his 23-year-old sister-in-law at knife point at their house here, police said on Friday.

It is being alleged that Bitti Mohanty was working at State Bank of Travancore with identity as Raghav Rajan.

Son of former Odisha DGP Bitti Mohanty has been captured and arrested in Kannur, Kerala for raping a German national in 2006, NDTV reports.
He was sentenced to 7 years' imprisonment and was missing since 2006.
Pakistan Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf's trip to Ajmer today has hit a sour note with the Ajmer Sharif spiritual head saying he will boycott the visit in protest against the recent brutal killing and beheading of Indian soldiers by the Pakistani Army.
"I will not welcome the Pakistani Prime Minister during his visit here in protest against the beheading and killing of Indian soldiers by Pakistani Army on LoC. The incident hurt Indians but their (Pakistan) government is not understanding our sentiments so I took the decision," Ajmer Sharif Dargah Diwan, Zainul Abedin Ali Khan told reporters.
Khan's boycott will be largely symbolic because he is seen as a ceremonial head. The Khadims, who control the 12th century shrine of Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, escort visiting dignitaries and assist pilgrims at the dargah.
Security in and around the shrine has been beefed up for Ashraf's visit today.
