Modi hits back at Sonia

Returning Sonia Gandhi's barb, Narendra Modi today said no party can be more poisonous than Congress as it has thrived on what she had called the "poison of power" for almost half a century.

A day after Sonia Gandhi said BJP was a party of poisonous people, Modi, addressing an election rally here, said Rahul Gandhi had once recalled that his mother Sonia had compared power to poison.

Maoist kill three in Jharkhand

IANS:
Maoist guerrillas killed three people at two places in Simdega district of Jharkhand, police said Sunday.

According to police, two people were shot dead in Kolibera area of Simdega district, around 110 km from Ranchi, Saturday night.

Officials added that People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI) owned responsibility for the killings in a pamphlet they left behind.

In the other incident, PLFI killed a person by slitting his throat after accusing him of collecting money in the organisation's name at Tethaitangar village of the same district.

PLFI is one of the six Maoist organisations operating in Jharkhand.

Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh presented before court

Arrested in connection with the Saradha Group chit-fund scam, suspended Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh was Sunday presented before a West Bengal court amid tight security.

Ghosh, who was the CEO of Saradha's media arm, was arrested Saturday night and has been charged under Sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 120B (conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Tehelka: Goa police records statements of witnesses

The Goa police today started recording statements of three witnesses with whom the Tehelka woman journalist had reportedly spoken to after the alleged sexual assault on her by the magazine editor Tarun Tejpal

These are three colleagues of the victim with whom she had interacted soon after the alleged assault happened at a Goa hotel around a fortnight ago. She had also reportedly sent them e-mailed copies of her complaint to Tehelka Managing Editor Shoma Chaudhary.

 Crossing midstream of his second innings and for the first time after departure of ally BJP, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will present the annual report card tomorrow on the performance of his government during the current year.

While the government will highlight achievements in different sectors during 2013, the BJP, now in opposition, and Congress will also bring out their own report cards for Kumar.

Gadkari, former BJP chief, was upbeat over the party's prospects in the current round of Assembly polls.

Will form Women Commando Force to fight crimes in Delhi, says BJP

Concerned over increasing cases of crime against women in Delhi, BJP has promised setting up of a women commando force and fast track courts to try such cases if voted to power in the upcoming Assembly polls.

Former BJP president Nitin Gadkari said the party has ambitious plans for development of Delhi in various sectors and wants to wipe out the tag of "rape capital" which he alleged the city has earned during the Congress rule, stressing that tackling this issue is the "highest priority".

EC proposal to SC seeks poll ban on those facing serious charges

Election Commission has proposed before Supreme Court that any person against whom a court has framed charges for offences punishable with a jail term of five years or more should be barred from contesting polls.

In an affidavit filed in the apex court, EC said that after being named in a case, a person ceases to have the integrity which is a must for any candidate seeking high public office.

Tehelka: Goa police questions Shoma Chaudhary

Tehelka Managing Editor Shoma Chaudhary was today questioned for more than six hours by Goa Police's special investigation team over the sexual assault allegation levelled by a woman journalist of the magazine against its editor Tarun Tejpal whose arrest is not being ruled out.

As the questioning went on, the victim issued a statement tonight suggesting she and her family were being subjected to pressure and intimidation at an "intensely traumatic" time to "protect" Tejpal.

French, Iranian FMs: Iran nuclear deal reached

The French and Iranian foreign ministers said early Sunday that a deal between six world powers and Iran has been struck that calls on Tehran to limit its nuclear activities in return for sanctions relief.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said, "Yes, we have a deal," as he walked past reporters crowding the hotel lobby where marathon negotiations had taken place over the past five days.

23 killed in violent attacks in Iraq

At least 23 people were killed and 95 others wounded in violent attacks in Iraq Saturday, including a massive bombing attack in a northern city, police said.

At least 12 people were killed and 72 others wounded when a suicide car bomb and a roadside bomb went off near a Shiite mosque in Tuz Khurmatu, 170 km north of Baghdad, Xinhua reported citing a police source.
