Alagiri refused a DMK ticket by his father Karunanidhi

MK Alagiri will not run from his constituency in Tamil Nadu as a candidate of the DMK, the party headed by his father, M Karunanidhi, reports NDTV.

"Don't hurt me by asking about Alagiri," said Mr Karunanidhi to reporters as he announced the regional party's candidates. Alagiri's constituency has of Madurai has been reassigned to another DMK member.

In January, Alagiri, who is 63, was suspended for a sustained campaign to undermine his younger brother, MK Stalin, who has been picked by his father as his political heir.

Suggestion on spousal rape opposed in Bahrain

Bahrain's top legal authority's suggestion that spousal rape should not be treated as crime has been opposed, local media reported.

The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) last Tuesday suggested that husbands who force themselves on their wives should not be prosecuted. Also, it said, the men who "reasonably" discipline their wives and daughters should be considered above the law.

Rebel RJD leader to contest poll against Lalu's daughter

Senior rebel RJD leader Ram Kirpal Yadav, who resigned from a party post after being denied ticket for the Lok Sabha polls, Monday declared that he would contest from Patliputra constituency in Patna against Lalu Prasad's daughter.

"I will contest from Patliputra seat. This was decided in a meeting with my supporters here," Yadav told media persons.

Guerrilla killed, army officer injured in Kashmir gunfight

One separatist guerrilla was killed and an army officer was injured Monday in an ongoing gunfight between the security forces and holed up militants in Kashmir's Kupwara district.

A senior police officer told IANS that after receiving specific information on the presence of a group of militants in a house in Vilgam village of the district, 110 km from here, a joint operation was mounted by the counter insurgency Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and the special operations group of the state police.

Last-minute decision to stay at Pistorius' apartment proved fatal for Reeva

Oscar Pistorius's girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp reportedly made a fatal, last-minute decision to stay at the Paralympic champions home with intentions to cook her boyfriend a romantic meal.

The 29-year-old model had intended to return to the home she shared with her friend Gina Myers, but she had a change of mind and texted Myers a few hours before she was shot, that she would stay the night at Pistorius's home, the report added.

About 42 African refugees drowned Sunday evening off the Yemeni coast when their boat capsized in the Gulf of Aden, the Yemeni government said, adding while about 30 people were rescued, search was on for more survivors.

Leopard on the loose triggers panic in Saharanpur

A leopard was on Sunday sighted in the jungles near two villages in the Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, triggering panic among people.

The feline was seen by villagers working in their fields in Ghumgarh and Shimlana villages. Forest department and police officials started a combing operation that lasted for four hours but managed to trace only the footprints of the big cat, an official said.

Rahul to visit Rajasthan today

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi will be on a day's visit to Rajasthan on Monday to begin election campaigning of the party in the state.

Gandhi will address a public meeting in Tonk district's Deoli town and will interact with labourers in Kolayat tehsil in Bikaner in the evening.

"Preparations for the events have been completed and the rally will be attended by senior leaders, including AICC General Secretary in-charge Gurudas Kamat, PCC chief Sachin Pilot and others," a spokesperson said.
