UP gives away free laptops to students
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav Monday kick-started the distribution of laptops to college students -- in line with his Samajwadi Party's election promise.
Of the 9,935 laptops meant to be given away, Yadav presented 51 to select students here to mark one year of the Samajwadi Party government.
At a function at the Colvin Taluqdars College, the chief minister, accompanied by many of his cabinet colleagues, distributed the laptops to the beneficiaries.
A visibly elated chief minister said: "I have been brought up with sad stories about Uttar Pradesh but I am sure the perception about the state will change from now on."
Rape accused who escaped in govt chopper, caught
The rape accused J&K man who managed to slip out of custody and make his escape in a government chopper to Jammu has been nabbed.
Earlier, the man managed to escape from Rajouri by pretending to be an accident victim. Hospital officials put him on the chopper, which was transporting victims to a hospital in Jammu for further treatment.
Action will be taken if Vijender is found guilty: sports ministry
Union sports minister Jitendra Singh today said that appropriate action will be taken against Olympic bronze-medallist Vijender Singh only if the boxer is found guilty in the drug scandal that has rocked Indian boxing.
"At this point of time the investigation is going on by the Punjab Police. When the conclusion comes and somebody is implicated or chargesheeted, we will definitely take action," said Singh.
Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said the Magistrate will carry out an inquiry into the death of Ram Singh. He said the preliminary report says Ram Singh committed suicide.
J&K rape accused makes getaway in govt chopper
A man accused of raping a woman in Jammu & Kashmir made a true Bollywood style getaway on a state-sponsored chopper.
The rape accused was at a Rajouri hospital for an injury when he managed to board the helicopter posing as an accident victim. The chopper was called to transfer victims to the Government Medical College Hospital at Jammu.
Earlier, several people had sustained serious injuries during a road accident at Manoorgala in Kandi area.
The man, identified as Mohammad Pervez, not only managed to slip away but was also paid Rs 5,000 as ex-gratia relief.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has ordered an inquiry into the matter.
Cell mates slept through Ram Singh's suicide
According to a report on NDTV, Ram Singh's cell mates were asleep when he killed himself.
The three other prisoners slept right through, and didn't stir as Singh went on to take his life using his clothes and portions of his sleeping mat to make a rope to suspend himself from the 8-ft high grill.
Ram Singh used bucket to climb up to the grill
Tihar Jail sources have confirmed that Ram Singh used a plastic bucket to climb up to the grill of the cell that he hanged himself to, CNN-IBN reported.
Sources say all the other four accused would be provided psychological assistance, too, and added that Ram Singh and others had been provided psychiatric help earlier too.
Meanwhile, the jail authorities have submitted a report on Singh's alleged suicide to the Home Ministry.
Security tightened at Saket court for production of other gangrape accused
Security was tightened on Delhi's Saket court premises where four of the remaining five rape accused, excluding the juvenile, were produced in connection with the case trial.
A fast track court has been holding in camera trial in the case.
Ram Singh's friends called him 'mental'
According to a report on Zee News, Ram Singh was said to be a lost case and was called 'mental' amongst his friends.
He is described as a volatile man, who got into frequent brawls, and was not remorseful of what he did to the 23-year-old paramedical student.
Infact, he has even admitted to drawing pleasure from brutalizing the girl and her friend. During police interrogations, he apparently told them that he went beserk when the girl bit him, and when her friend put up a fight. He said that was when he took a rod and began hitting them.
He even stripped the couple of their clothes and seized their mobiles to ensure that the gang did not leave behind any incriminating evidence.
A three-member team of doctors has been formed to conduct the post-mortem of Delhi gangrape accused Ram Singh.
Ram Singh hanged himself from 8-ft high grill
Ram Singh hung himself from the ventilator grill above a door. The grill is said to be 8 feet from the ground. Questions arise on how he reached that height to fix the noose.
Crime branch, forensic team have reached Tihar jail. Investigators are awaiting the autopsy report that will reveal the exact cause of death.
His post-mortem is being conducted at Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital.
BJP to raise Ram Singh's suicide in Parliament
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said it will Ram Singh's suicide in jail in the Parliament.
"We want to know the circumstances behind the suicide of Ram Singh. It is highly irresponsible on the part of Tihar authorities that an inmate and prime accused in a high-profile case commits suicide," said BJP leader Najma Heptullah.
Saying that the BJP would raise the matter in parliament, Heptullah said: "We want to know how it will impact the trial and why he (Ram Singh) was not under electronic surveillance."
Security tightened for other gangrape accused; Dikshit refuses to comment on suicide
Following Ram Singh's suicide, the security of the four other accused in the Delhi gangrape case has been increased.
They will be produced in the trial court later on Monday.
Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit refused to comment on the alleged suicide, saying it won't be right to say anything before a probe report is complete, CNN-IBN reported.
She said she did not discuss the case with Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, but only informed him about the death of the main accused in the Delhi gangrape case.
Ram Singh's father screams murder, says his son was sodomised by co-inmates
Ram Singh's father said that his son was ashamed since the incident and so had demanded the death sentence in the court. He said his son would not commit suicide, and alleged that he had been murdered, Headlines Today reported.
Mangelal, Ram Singh's father, also alleged that his son and his brother, Mukesh, had told him a few days ago that they were being sodomised and assaulted in jail by co-inmates. He said that Ram was once attacked with a blade.
He demanded a CBI probe into his son's death.
Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde will meet Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at 11 am following Ram Singh's suicide.
Singh's lawyer, A. P. Singh, confirmed his client's death, saying he died at 5:30 a.m. He alleged that police maleficence led to his client's death.
"What do you mean killed himself? He has been killed in prison," Singh said.
Lawyers for the men have previously accused police of beating confessions out of their clients.
Indian jails have a reputation for overcrowding, poor management and brutal treatment of inmates.
Not surprised by Ram Singh's suicide: Kiran Bedi
Former IPS officer Kiran Bedi said that if the prosecution was strong and if it had all the evidence, the trial would go on smoothly. "It just means one accused less," Kiran Bedi told CNN-IBN.
She was also quoted by Zee news as saying, “I am not surprised by the suicide by Ram Singh since accused in heinous crimes are often isolated and humiliated.”
Not thrilled with Ram Singh's suicide, wanted him to be hanged publicly: Delhi rape victim's brother
TOI: The gang-rape victim's brother said that he was not very thrilled with the news of Ram Singh's suicide.
"He knew he was going to die anyway because we had and still have such a strong case against him," the physiotherapist's 20-year-old brother told Reuters.
"I'm not very thrilled with the news that he killed himself because I wanted him to be hanged ... publicly. Him dying on his own terms seems unfair. But, oh well, one is down. Hopefully the rest will wait for their death sentence."
Inmates of Ram Singh's cell being questioned
The other inmates of the cell in which Ram Singh was lodged in Tihar Jail are being questioned over his suicide. The guard on duty outside the cell and the warden will also be questioned.
Sources have indicated that there were no CCTV cameras outside the cell that Ram Singh was lodged in. This raises more questions on the Tihar Jail authorities'competency as the Delhi Police had earlier written to the prisons department to keep these undertrials under tight vigil.
Delhi gangrape-murder case: Ram Singh was not under mental stress, says his lawyer
CNN: The lawyer of Ram Singh, the main accused in the Delhi gangrape case who committed suicide, was 'shocked' to hear about the death of his client. Speaking to CNN-IBN, the lawyer, VK Anand said Ram Singh showed no signs of distress and had no reasons to commit suicide.
"Ram Singh was not under mental stress. I do not think there was any reason for him to commit suicide. I am shocked to hear this news," Anand said.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Mamata Sharma demanded a thorough probe to find out what pushed Ram Singh, one of the key accused in the December 16 Delhi gang-rape case, to commit suicide in his cell, Zee news reported.
“Suicide in a high security jail like Tihat is a mater of serious security lapse. The authorities must conduct a thorough probe to ascertain what led Ram Singh to tale such extreme step,” she was quoted as saying.
However, the NCW chief said, “Ram Singh’s suicide will not affect the ongoing trial in the December 16 Delhi gang-rape case.”
Reports indicate that the jail authorities have ordered a probe into the suicide of the prime accused in the Delhi gang rape case. A forensics team has also arrived at the Tihar jail.
Reports indicate that Ram Singh may have used to his own clothes to hang himself in the Tihar Jail.

A team of Rajasthan Police is expected to arrive in Kerala tomorrow to seek custody of rape case convict Bitti.
Jaipur Assistant Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph told a Malayalam television channel that a team of Rajasthan Police would reach Kannur tomorrow with jail and production warrants.
Rape convict Bitti Mohanty had impersonated as another person and had been working in a bank in Kerala's Kannur, after acquiring an MBA degree.
According to police sources Mohanty had been living in Kerala for the last three and a half years, with the help of a fake passport, a driving licence and even a college degree certificate in the name of Raghav Rajan.
Son of a former Odisha DGP B B Mohanty, Bitti had been working as a Probationary Officer in a public sector bank here for the last three years impersonating as 'Raghav' from Andhra Pradesh.
He had been charged with cheating, forgery and impersonation by Kerala Police.
