The ruling BJP and opposition Congress are still locked in a nail-biting seesaw battle as Uttarakhand appears poised for a hung assembly amid no clear winner in the 70-member house.

BJP won 17 seats, including Sitarganj and Nanakmatta seats, and was leading in another 15.

The Congress bagged 15, including Haldwani and Almora constituencies, and was leading in 17 more.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) which may hold the key to government formation in the hill state has won two seats and was leading in one more.
Uttarakhand Kranti Dal-Panwar was leading in one. Others were leading in five seats.

The contest in Uttarakhand is going down to the wire still with BJP and Congress in a neck-and-neck race with BJP holding a slight advantage at the moment.

In the Rudraprayag constituency, Harak Singh Rawat of the Congress party, who is facing his brother-in-law, Matbar Singh Kandari of the BJP, is leading with 8,439 votes.

Many view Rawat as the chief CM candidate if the Congress does win.
Kandari, on the otherhand, is looking for a hattrick.

Based on current data from the EC, here’s how the parties stand in the counting. BJP are leading in 30 seats, having won one seat. The Congress are leading in 29 seats and the BSP are leading in 4 seats.

The BJP’s efforts to build its reputation -- after a series of corruption charges -- centered around one man: B.C. Khanduri, who is currently leading with 10,860 votes in the Kotdwar constituency ahead of SS Negi of the Congress party.

Khanduri was reeled in by the party last year to replace the then-CM, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, in the hope of improving a deteriorating reputation of the party following a series of corruption charges.

Uttarakhand CM B C Khanduri, who was initially trailing, has taken a lead of 500 votes against S S Negi of Congress in the Kotdwar seat, sources said.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Indira Haridayesh is leading with 4000 votes from Haldwani constituency against Renu Adhikari of BJP. State BJP president Bishan Singh Chufal is leading by 688 votes from Didihaat constituency.

Trends suggest Uttarakhand is headed for a hung assembly with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) leading in 29 seats and the Congress ahead in 28 seats of the 70 assembly constituencies.

It has been a close fight with both of them taking marginal leads over the other through the course of the day.

The BSP was third with leads in four seats while the SP registered nothing.

Experts say that the voting trends suggest that the voters are fed up with the internal conflicts within the ruling BJP and have voted for a change this time around.

Congress minister Harish Rawat is widely expected to take the CM post if the party does manage to oust the BJP in the state.

Current poll trends in Uttarakhand - Cong (28), BJP (27), BSP (5), Others (8):

The latest figures indicate that Chief minister B C Khanduri was trailing from the Kotdwar seat by 90 votes against Congress' S S Negi. While Congress leader Indira Haridayesh was leading with 4000 votes from Haldwani constituency against BJP's Renu Adhikari.

However, state BJP president Bishan Singh Chufal was leading by 688 votes from Didihaat constituency.

Despite the trends suggesting a neck-and-neck affair between the BJP and Congress in the state, the Congress leadership are confident of getting the majority.

With everyone still left in the loop over whether BJP can retain power in the state, poll experts are wondering if the fierce anti-corruption movement by Hazare and Ramdev had any implications, or none at all, on the end result today. The poll leads point to these three main talking points among experts:

1) The voters don’t care as much about graft as the Hazare movement led us to believe, preferring instead, to vote for candidates they know or based on other factors. 2) The close fight suggests the BJP has not done enough to turn its image around. 3) People don’t think Nishank, the former chief minister, is guilty.

Last time around, the BJP won 34 seats, followed by the Congress party with 21 and the BSP with eight.

This time around, it’s neck and neck.

Most exit polls had predicted the Congress returning to power with 30-35 seats, but poll trends suggest otherwise -- it is too close to call.

State Chief Minister B.C. Khanduri is facing off against Surendra Singh Negi from Kotdwar seat. Former CM Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Khanduri, and several other ministers are also facing stiff competition in different constituencies.

The Rudraprayag constituency in Garhwal region is of particular interest as the Leader of the Opposition, Harak Singh Rawat, is taking on his brother-in-law and Irrigation Minister Matbar Singh Kandari.

Rawat is being seen as a hot contender for the post of CM if Congress does manage to return to power.
