New Delhi: In a unique move to ensure safety of women passengers, radio cab company Meru will send SMS alerts about the cab's location to a family member or friend for the duration of the journey, a statement said Thursday.
To be launched Friday on the occasion of International Women's Day, the 'Trip Tracker Service' will be free of cost and will initially be available in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.
According to Meru, the service can be availed while booking a cab on phone 4422 4422 or the website wherein an option is available for the customer to provide a "tracking number" on which the alerts would be sent.
An SMS alert would be sent at the beginning of the trip followed by updates every 15 minutes. A final message would be sent at the end of the trip with the location where the trip ended.
"An appointed person or family member of the lady traveller will be sent SMS alerts about the cab location and journey, thereby ensuring a sense of safety and assurance for the lady traveller," said Siddhartha Pahwa, chief executive officer, Meru Cabs.
"This new safety initiative will further strengthen the trust our customers have in our services, and will provide the much needed safety assurance especially to our women commuters and their families," he added.
