Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh on Saturday said loss to the public and private property could be much higher due to flash floods in the state than the preliminary estimate of around Rs 2575 crore as was made by the state government.

He said the detailed estimate of the loss caused by flash floods would be assessed after normal life is restored in the entire area.

Singh said that revenue officials would conduct detailed survey to the loss of property and the state government will give suitable compensations to the people who have lost lives and properties in the devastating flash floods.

He said the tragedy has pushed the north Indian state one year back in terms of development.

Singh said around 90 percent cash crops, particularly apple, has been completely destroyed by flash floods in Kinnaur district.

He said consumers of metropolitan cities will miss the popular apple varieties of snow bound Kinnaur district during the current apple season.

The Chief Minister said the government has para-dropped 300 horticulture experts in the Kinnaur region to restore the damaged apple trees and bring them to original shape and size through various horticulture techniques.

Singh said that all the tourists in Kinnaur have been airlifted and added that no death of any tourist has been reported from flood-affected areas of the state.

He said that it was for the first time in the history of Kinnaur that the area had experienced snow fall in the month of June.

He said the entire area had experienced heavy snowfall and rainfall for continuous 72 hours from June 15 to June 17.

Singh said that restoration of electricity, water supply and other essential services were being done on war footing in the entire area and hoped that all the essential services will be restored in the entire affected area in a month´s time.

The Chief Minister criticised the state´s top Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership for labeling baseless allegation against the Himachal Pradesh government regarding flood relief measures and told that not even a single BJP leader has visited the flood-hit areas in the state so far.

Singh said the BJP leaders only criticised the government and provoked the people while sitting in their homes comfortably at distant places from tragedy sites.
