Maha to reward informers, who tip about tiger poachers

Mumbai: In a bid to save tigers, the Maharashtra government has decided to provide a handsome incentive to informers, who tip about smugglers and poachers, to forest officials.

"The forest department has earmarked Rs 50 lakh as a secret fund to informers who will provide effective information to forest officials about poaching of tigers," a senior forest department official said.

The official said since the issuance of notification got delayed in this regard only Rs 20 lakhs have been earmarked till March end.

"The Range Forest Officer (RFO) and Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) have been authorised to give Rs 10,000 to the informer. If the amount is over Rs 10,000 then the Forest department will take a call," he added.

The official further said that audit of this secret fund will be not be conducted, as they are specially meant for informers.
