A 23-year-old man will spend the rest of his life in jail in the death of a 13-year-old California boy who was caught in the crossfire of a gang shootout while attending a barbecue with his family.

A San Joaquin County Superior Court judge sentenced 23-year-old Chanreasmey Prum to life without parole Tuesday. Prosecutors say Prum fired the fatal shot that struck Aaron Kelly Jr. of Stockton in the chest on Feb. 8, 2008.

Kelly was attending a barbecue with his family in a Stockton park when authorities say Prum and three other defendants in the case confronted a rival gang member. The other three defendants were sentenced in September.

Kelly was shot and killed in his mother's car as she fled the scene.

Prum maintained at trial that he did not intend to shoot Kelly, but was firing at a rival gang member.
