[India], Mar 30 (ANI): Octogenarian tribal Congress leader Manikrao Gavit on Saturday said that he and his son will continue to remain with the party.

"Today, I met with senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge and discussed why the party did not give a ticket to my son Bharat Gavit this time. He told me that they will consider Gavit family in all the elections from now on be it municipal or assembly election," Gavit said a day after his son Bharat Gavit announced that he will contest the NandurbarLok Sabha constituency as an Independent candidate in upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

"My son Bharat Gavit and I won't go against Congress and will remain with Congress," he said after the meeting.

"Kharge Ji called us today so we met him at his place. He assured us that there will not be any injustice to Gavit family and whatever election comes here on, we will consider Gavit family."

Bharat had announced his candidature after Congress declared KC Padavi as its candidate from Nandurbar parliamentary constituency.

Manikrao further said that he had a strong relationship with the Gandhi family from Indira Gandhi to Rajiv Gandhi and now Sonia Gandhi to Rahul Gandhi that will remain forever.

Manikrao was representing the Nandurbar Lok Sabha constituency since 1981. He lost from the seat in 2014 general elections to BJP's Heena Gavit. It is believed that he was pushing for a ticket for Bharat from the reserved seat. But, the party gave the ticket to Padavi. (ANI)
