Five policemen were killed in broad daylight by Maoist rebels in Jharkhand on Thursday.
Maoist rebels attacked a police patrol near a bus shelter in the Chainpur police station area around 11.30 am, police said.
An assistant sub-inspector, a havildar and three constables were killed while the Maoists stole three INSAS rifles, 600 rounds of ammunition and eight hand grenades.
The attack followed Tuesday night´s bombing of the Sreeram panchayat secretariat building in Lohardaga in which however, no one was killed.
The escalated violence seemed to be a result of the killing of ten Maoist cadres including some senior leaders in Lakramanda Tola in Kunda block of Chatra district.
The rebels had been killed in a gunbattle with the Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TPC), widely believed to have state backing, that began on March 27.
