Maoists' threat looms large in rebel-infested West Bengal's Lalgarh area as extremists today observed martyrs day in the honour of its cadres killed in police firing.

To make their presence felt and strike fear in the villagers mind, the Maoists' build 'Saheed Vedi' (small structure) to honour their dead and paste inflammatory banners.

The region was out of bounds for the West Bengal administration for eight months before security forces reclaimed it on 30, June 2009.

Despite heavy police presence in the area, locals don't step out from their home after evening and are forced to attend kangaroo's courts.

"We haven't seen such a thing in our life that is why we are very scared," said Durga Saren, a villager.

The Maoists have also significantly increased their presence in tribal and rural regions in Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa. (ANI)
