Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Thursday criticised the Centre for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raids at Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader MK Stalin's residence in Chennai in a case of alleged import of cars costing Rs 20 crore.

She claimed that both the Congress and the Bbharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have misused the probe agency.

"Both the Congress and the BJP, whenever they have formed the government at the Centre, they have misused the CBI," Mayawati told reporters on Thursday.

"I have been a victim of the misuse of CBI," the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh earlier in the day said the government did not order the raids that were conducted at Stalin´s residence in Chennai.

The CBI team that went to the premises of Stalin called off the raids following reported political intervention.

Calling the timing of the raids as ´unfortunate´, the PM said: "The timing of the raid is unfortunate. The government did not do it. We will find out who is responsible."

The raids came only two days after the M Karunanidhi´s DMK walked out of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the centre over its alleged "soft stance" against Sri Lanka on the issue of atrocities on Lankan Tamils.

The raids were conducted on the basis of a Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) complaint on the allegedly illegal import of cars.

However, the raids were soon stopped after union ministers P Chidambaram and Kamal Nath intervened and said they disapproved of the CBI move, said media reports.
