Michael McCoy and Bill Williamson each won two matches Wednesday at the Country Club of Birmingham to advance to the 36-hole final in the U.S. Mid-Amateur.

The 50-year-old McCoy, from West Des Moines, Iowa, routed Bradley Bastion of Clinton Township, Mich., 7 and 6 in the morning quarterfinals, and beat Kevin Marsh of Henderson, Nev., 4 and 3 in the afternoon semifinals.

"I love golf. I love to practice. I love to play competitive golf. It's truly my passion," McCoy said. "It's exciting to have something like this happen."

The 36-year-old Williamson, from Cincinnati, pounded Matt Schneider of Grand Rapids, Minn., 8 and 6 in the quarterfinals, and topped Kenneth McCready of San Diego 2 and 1 in the semifinals.

"It was hard fought today," Williamson said

The tournament is limited to players 25 and older.

McCoy, who also competed this year in the U.S. Senior Open and U.S. Amateur, had a 5-up advantage through the opening eight holes in his semifinal by making five birdies. He holed an 18-foot birdie chip from behind the green on the par-3 fifth to halve the hole. McCoy then stuck a 9-iron to 6 feet at No. 6 to start a run of three consecutive hole victories.

"It wasn't an easy shot," McCoy said about the chip-in. "It was severely downhill, but the lie was OK. It checked down there."
