Chennai: Leader of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) party, 'Vaiko' Gopalswamy, led a mass protest rally of his supporters here on Tuesday demanding release of a Sri Lankan refugee named Senthuran.
Senthuran is currently interned in a special detention camp at Poonamallee and also observing an indefinite fast along with six other Sri Lankan Tamils since August 6.
Reportedly, police had detained Senthuran at Chenkalpattu Detention Center for his suspected movements, but due to his prolonged agitation he was shifted the Poonamallee Camp.
Vaiko urged the Tamil Nadu Government to release Senthuran and his associates at the earliest.
"To get justice not only for himself but all other Eelam Tamils, he is undergoing this fast risking his life. I make an appeal, a humble appeal to the Tamil Nadu Government, to the honourable Chief Minister (J.Jayalalithaa) who has taken right earnest steps in these Eelam Tamil issue since she occupied office," said 'Vaiko' Gopalswamy.
He also blamed the state government for not letting him and other sympathisers to meet the Sri Lankan Tamils at the heavily guarded Poonamallee Camp.
