Lauding the UPA Government at the Centre and the Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance Government in the state, Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh on Friday assured to empower the tribal governing bodies and improve the representation of women in decision-making bodies.
Speaking at an election rally at the Polo Grounds here, Dr. said: "We will empower self-governing bodies and work for greater say of women in administrative decision making as we believe that this will help Meghalaya get more benefits from Central schemes being implemented in the state."
The UPA has been able to achieve faster reduction in poverty than ever before. The rate at which the percentage of the poor people declined since 2004 is about two and a half times that of the previous decade," he added, while listing out the achievements of the Centre and the Meghalaya Government.
Dr. Singh said Meghalaya's economic growth doubled to Rs 4000 crore in the last three years , and the state achieved a faster growth rate than targeted in the 11th Plan.
"The party provided an honest, transparent and effective administration which took care of the poor and the underprivileged," he added, while praising the state government for utilising resources provided by the Centre under its flagship programmes.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi are also scheduled to address election rallies in the state on February 19 and 20 respectively.
Polling in Meghalaya to elect a 60-member assembly will take place on February 23.(ANI)
