Mumbai: A Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader has been caught on camera assaulting a 65-year-old man, in an incident expected to stoke outrage against the the right-wing outfit.
In footage broadcast by national news channels, MNS corporator Nitin Nikam was seen brutally slapping Kalyan DV Patil who works as a private contractor with the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC).
According to reports, Nikam had summoned Patil following complaints about delays in water pipeline repair work that had caused water shortage in the Ganeshwadi locality.
Patil later alleged that when he went to file a complaint against Nikam, the police only registered a non-cognizable offence.
While most MNS leaders refused to comment on the incident, Nikam tdefended his action and told a news channel that he had the best interests of the people at heart.
MNS and its parent party Shiv Sena have frequently been the target of national outcries against the groups' heavyhanded moral policing and intolerant regional discrimination.
