New Delhi: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma on Tuesday alleged that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi misused millions of public funds meant fro development of the state for his publicity.

He also said state was far behind on social indicators.

"In one year, Chief Minister Narendra Modi has misused public funds to the tune of Rs.1100 crore for his publicity," said Sharma in Surat city.

The minister also claimed that Gujarat's growth rate was lower than Uttarakhand and Haryana.

"It went up to 8.6 percent, but Gujarat was at third position in the first phase. Maharashtra, Punjab and Tamil Nadu were ahead of it. In the second phase, the states which registered more growth rate than Gujarat were Uttarakhand 11.81 percent and Haryana 8.95 percent," he said.

In 2011, the per capita in the state was nearly Rs.70,000 that is behind five other states.

"In per capita income, Gujarat is at sixth position. Not the last but at the sixth position and it at first. Five states are above it. In 2011, the per-capital income is 63, 996," added he.

Sharma said nearly 32 percent people live below the poverty line in Gujarat.

"As far as human resource development is concerned, Gujarat is one of the backward states. The number of people living below the poverty line has gone up in Narendra Modi's Gujarat. Nearly 32 percent people live below the poverty line in Gujarat," he said.

Meanwhile, the BJP workers organised a motorbike rally in the city to campaign.

Gujarat will vote in a staggered election on December 13 and December 17. A narrow victory for Modi, or a shock defeat, would probably scupper his chances of leading the BJP into 2014. But he is unlikely to lose. (ANI)
