Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Monday took on Sonia Gandhi who has been on campaign trail in the state for the coming elections, saying that the Congress President was a stranger to the state.

"Today, Sonia Gandhi made an appearance in the neighbouring town. She must have thought, visiting Siddhpur will wash away Congress´ sins. But Congress´ sins can´t be washed away," Modi said addressing a rally in Patan.

"Soniaben said in Siddhpur that my mother-in-law had come to this town. So what? Does that mean you should vote for Congress?

"Soniaben made a point that Pandit Nehru did a lot of work of Gujarat, but she forgot the work done by the governments that came after Nehru." Modi said.

Likening the Congress to a "stranger" in the state, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said, "If you are going on holiday for 15 days, do you give your keys to a stranger? No. Then, how can you give Gujarat to a stranger?"

"You know me very well, know my work and know what I have done for development of this state," he added.

Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi on Monday slammed the Gujara government and said its policies were "anti-people" and "anti-farmer".

"Modi government´s policies are anti-people. Lakhs are reeling under poverty," Gandhi said while addressing a rally at Siddhpur town of Patan district in the poll-bound Gujarat.

"The UPA government initiated waiver schemes but the Gujarat government did not implement it," she said.

"Thousands of crores of farm loans were waived but the farmers in Gujarat did not benefit," said Sonia Gandhi.

Gujarat will vote in two phases on Dec 13 and 17.

The results will be declared on Dec 20.
