Punjab Police on Thursday arrested a local Shiromani Akali Dal leader Ranjit Singh Rana in connection with the murder of a police officer, who had opposed his daughter's harassment by the politician and his associates.
Rana, general secretary of the Akali Dal's local unit, is alleged to have shot Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Ravinderpal Singh in full public view in Amritsar's Chehertha locality on Wednesday.
The officer was rushed to hospital with heavy bleeding and declared dead.
Singh's daughter had complained to him about frequent harassment by Rana and his associates. When Singh, along with his daughter, went to Rana's house to warn him, the politician is alleged to have shot him in the legs. The woman too suffered bullet wounds in her hand.
Meanwhile, condemning the incident, Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa said: "This is a very unfortunate incident and we condemned it. You can see how safe is a common man's life in Punjab."
"What Taliban have done to Pakistan, the Akali Dal is doing to Punjab. Incidents like the ASI killing are happening regularly here. Punjab Deputy Chief Minister and Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal should resign," he added. (ANI)
