Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi continued to shine at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s National Council meeting here as party president Rajnath Singh called the leader, who won a third consecutive election in the western Indian state, as 'the most popular Chief Minister'.
Singh heaped praises on Modi and said Gujarat has become an ´example under the leadership´ of the Chief Minister.
"The victory in the Gujarat legislative assembly is the most important among the good news which we have received in last few months. Though we have been winning in Gujarat assembly elections since 1995 this victory is historic because it is the third victory in a row under the leadership of the most popular chief minister Shri Narendra Bhai Modi," Singh said at BJP´s National Council Meeting.
Praising Modi, who is tipped to be a strong contender to emerge as BJP´s prime ministerial candidate for the next year´s polls despite objections from many NDA allies like Janata Dal (United), Singh said: "Gujarat has become an example under the leadership of Narendra Bhai Modi to show what is the difference between the capacity to govern between BJP and other party´s rule if opportunity is given to continue in power for a long time . We extend our greetings to Narendra Modi for this hat-trick."
Modi is likely to be appointed the chairman of the BJP´s election committee by the end of March, according to media reports on Saturday.
At the ongoing conclave of the BJP, Modi is getting a special treatment. He was welcomed specially for the massive win in the state elections for the third consecutive term.
With the upcoming assembly polls and the general elections in 2014 in focus, the BJP is holding its National Council and National Executive meeting in New Delhi from Friday.
The National Executive was held on March 1 while the two day national council is being held from March 2.
Media reports said some party leaders are pitching for Modi to be selected as the prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 polls.
"2014 will be the time of BJP and we have to all try for that unitedly," said BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad quoting leaders like former president Nitin Gadkari and president Rajnath Singh.
"Modi was specially welcomed for third consecutive win. Modi has created a new record among the BJP chief ministers. Rajnath Singh and all others congratulated him for that," said Prasad.
The conclave will chalk out the road map for strategies and preparations for the upcoming general elections. Party workers will be conveyed to go to the public with the slogan of ´´sushasan sankalp BJP vikalp´´, meaning "Resolve for Good Governance, BJP as Alternative".
