President Pranab Mukherjee met officials of Territorial Army along with their spouses in New Delhi on Wednesday, a day after the outfit celebrated its Raising Day.
Mukherjee greeted all the officials at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The Territorial Army originated in 1857 under British colonial rule, when the then British Government raised a Citizens Volunteer Force known as the Indian Defence Force.
The Territorial Army was formally inaugurated in 1949 after the "Territorial Army Act" was passed in 1948.
The Territorial Army has proved its usefulness not only in times of war but also during peace time, assisting in crisis management when affected by natural calamities.
It also played a vital role in the 1962 Sino-Indian War and 1971 Indo-Pak conflict.
Today, the Territorial Army is actively participating in counter insurgency operations in restive Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast and is performing very creditably in assisting the regular army. (ANI)
