Mulayam Singh Yadav meets PM

Ahead of the all-party meeting called by the government to break the logjam in Parliament, Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav on Monday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here, reports said.

Meanwhile, both houses of the Parliament were adjourned for the day on Monday as the Opposition continued to create uproarious scenes over the issue of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail.

The Parliament could not function since the beginning of the Winter Session last week because of sustained protests by the Opposition in both Houses over the same issue.

The Opposition demands a vote on the issue under rule 184, which entails voting. The government is opposed to it.

Reports citing sources said at the Monday meeting, the government may agree to the voting if it was sure of a win.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Left are expected to vote against the government if a voting takes place.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) will vote against it in the wake of its bid to move a no-confidence motion against the government.

On Sunday, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad´s met with DMK chief M Karunanidhi to bring the UPA ally on board on FDI, but failed to make any headway.

"Karunanidhi has lots of reservations on FDI in retail. He has sought another round of meeting with UPA allies on the issue," Azad said after the meeting.
