The Mumbai Police on Wednesday said they have started investigating the alleged rape and murder of a minor in Mumbai's Worli area.
The body of the nine-year-old victim was found on a footpath in the area.
The police on Tuesday detained and questioned several people in connection to the case.
The girl stayed with her family on a pavement in Worli.
"The victim went to sleep at around midnight Monday but when the family woke up at 6:30 am, she was missing. They started a search and found her dead body around a 100 feet away from the house on the same road," Additional Commissioner of Police (Central region) Praveen Salunke told The Indian Express.
The police on Tuesday took the victim´s body to Poddar Hospital and then to Nair Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Her postmortem report said she was raped.
The police said there were strangulation marks on the girl´s neck.
