Mumbai: At least 37 people died and more than 15 were injured after a private bus carrying them fell off a bridge near Khed in Ratnagiri district on the Mumbai-Goa highway, police said.
The driver of the bus has been reported as one among the injured in the accident that took place around 2:30 am.
The bus was on its way from Goa to Mumbai, and it suddenly lost control on the Bharna bridge over Jagbudi river, 190 km away from Mumbai, and crashed into the river, officials said.
The injured passengers have been shifted to Khed civil hospital, and some of them have head injuries.
Police is now investigating the cause of the accident including the probability of the driver being drunk while driving. The driver has been subjected to a medical test.
