Mumbai: One of the most sought after projects in India-the Mumbai metro-is scheduled to have its first trial run on Wednesday with Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan being one of its first commuters.

In an attempt to reduce the burden of the Mumbai local trains, the project has been accomplished jointly by Reliance Infra and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The project was commenced in February 2008 and will run between Versova and Ghatkopar, while connecting western suburbs to eastern suburbs, in its first phase.

The route is expected to be operational by December 2013.
