Mumbai, Aug 6 (IBNS) The captain and chief engineer of MV Rak, a Panama flag registered bulk carrier that sank off Mumbai coast in the Arabian Sea on Thursday, were arrested on Saturday on charges of negligence and endangering safety.
According to media reports, the ship, carrying about 290 tons of fuel oil and 50 tons of diesel, posed threat of oil spill.
A First Information Report (FIR) was lodged with the city's Yellow Gate police against the owner, captain and crew members under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) after coast guards found patches of oil in the area.
Already two ships-Kamla Devi and Samudra Prahari-have been deployed for rescue operations. A pollution counter ship has also been sent.
Two Dornier aircrafts are scheduled to be launched from Daman to spray dispersants.
MV Rak sank about 20 NM off Mumbai coast in the Arabian Sea on Thursday but the Navy and Coast Guard launched a dramatic rescue operation with helicopters and a smaller vessel to save the sailors and crew after they got the intimation at around 07. 25 am.
