Himachal Pradesh Forest Minister J.P. Nadda, who was appointed a general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday, resigned as cabinet minister Thursday to take up his new party assignment.

Nadda met Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal here and submitted his resignation.

'I have submitted my resignation to the chief minister,' he told reporters.

However, Dhumal said: 'I have asked Nadda to continue till the conclusion of the budget session (April 13) of the assembly.'

Nadda, who started his political career as a student leader in 1978, said expanding the party's support base to bring it back to power would be the main priority.
