Chennai: Professional car racer Ashiwn Sundar and his wife Nivedhitha were burnt to death after their BMW car rammed into a tree in Santhome High road during the early hours of Saturday at around 3:30 am.
According to the police, the couple was trapped inside the car unable to open the doors. The fire then engulfed the car, leading to the death of Ashwin and his wife.
A passerby, who witnessed the accident, informed the Chennai City Police after which a team of police personnel from Adyar rushed to the spot.
The police along with the fire and rescue service personnel from Mylapore fought for around half an hour to put out the fire. The police finally broke open the car and found the body of the couple.
A video, appears to have been recorded by one of the passers-by, has surfaced online wherein the car can be seen in flames next to a tree.
The bodies have been sent to the Government Royapettah hospital for post-mortem.
It is known that the police identified the couple using the registration number of the car.
The accident occurred while the couple was returning home from a friend's place in Raja Annamalaipuram. The duo lived in Alapakkam near Porur.
