Kolkata, Jan 13 (IBNS) A new born was stolen from a state-run hospital in Kolkata on Friday afternoon, a news channel reported quoting hospital officials and the family of the baby.

The baby was stolen from Chittaranjan Hospital and a woman in a burqa, though with the face not covered, caught in the CCTV footage, is being seen as one of the suspects.

Taniza Fatima had delivered the baby two days back and the baby was stolen between 3 and 4 pm Friday.

The family members of the stolen baby who appealed to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to find the new born from the studio of Bengal channel Star Ananda said the baby's mother has taken seriously ill after the baby theft.

A senior hospital official (Superintendent) said they have informed the police and the cops were trying hard to trace the baby.

The official said the person (could be the lady) who stole the baby had entered in the maternity ward with a green card that allows the family of the baby inside.

The family denied that their green card was misplaced.

Earlier, in yet another incident of alleged medical negligence, a new mother died in Kolkata after she was denied admission by two state-run medical facilities.

Both Chittaranjan Hospital and Shambhuath Pandit Hospital reportedly declined to admit Usha Devi and forced her to shuttle between the two hospitals on Thursday night.

"She was not admitted and they (Chittaranjan Medical Hospital) told us to take her to Shambhunath Pandit Hospital. Shambhunath Pandit Hospital also declined her admission," Usha´s husband told a local news channel.

Usha´s husband first took her to Chittaranjan Hospital on Thursday night after she went into labour.

However, the state-run hospital refused to admit Usha and referred her to Shambhunath Pandit Hospital.

Usha, a slum-dweller, gave birth to her first baby outside Chittaranjan Hospital.

Usha and her newborn were then taken to Shambhunath Pandit Hospital but authorities of the state-run medical facility allegedly refused to admit her and referred her back to Chittaranjan Hospital.

She gave birth to her second child outside Shambhunath Pandhit Hospital the same night.

Usha died soon after giving birth to the second child.

Her twins are also in critical condition, media reports said.

Meanwhile, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Suryakanta Mishra said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee should leave the Health & Family Welfare portfolio.

"I feel that Chief Minister should give up the health department," Mishra said.
