The Badaun gang-rape got a sudden twist when UP’s top cop said that one of the two victims was not raped and the murders could be related to property dispute and honour killings.

AL Banerjee, UP’s Director General of Police, was quoted by media as saying, “One of the girls was her father's only daughter. They are three brothers who have limited resources. In case she is not alive, it could benefit others. It (property) could be one of the motives. I am not saying that this is the motive.”

Initial investigation and post-mortem had said that the girls died due to hanging after rape. However, Banerjee noted, “All five accused will be subjected to lie-detector test and narco-analysis after permission from the court. The two girls were gagged and that led to death by asphyxiation... We found pieces of cloth in their mouth. They were throttled after being gagged.”

The Badaun rape case has exposed UP’s fragile law and order machinery and the inability of the state government to protect the women. After insensitive statements and an attempt to pass the buck, the Akhilesh Yadav government has transferred more than 100 IAS and IPS officers.
