Kolkata: West Bengal Minister for Women and Child Development and Social Welfare Sabitri Mitra today froze the number of new appointments under the ICDS in various districts, saying there were irregularities in the manner the appointments were made.
"These appointments were made in back dates. So I have asked the district magistrates to keep the appointments on hold," she told newsmen after a review meeting.
Mitra, who was given charge of the department on Friday, however, did not specify the number of appointments frozen.
Stating that a number of retired officers in her department were given continued extension by the previous government, Mitra said they would not be given any further extension. "I will bring in new faces."
The minister said she had received complaints from a number of inmates of welfare homes that they were being tortured.
"I have asked the officers to look into the complaints and take action. I will visit the homes myself periodically," she said.
Mitra said she would also look into the possibility of providing jobs in her department to women inmates of welfare homes who are aged 18 years or above.
