NH report criticizes hospital in hep C outbreak

A New Hampshire health department report says a hospital ignored employee concerns about a medical technician accused of infecting patients with hepatitis C and told at least one not to file a complaint.

Former Exeter Hospital technician David Kwiatkowski (kwiht-KOW'-skee) is accused of stealing painkillers and replacing them with saline tainted with his blood. Dozens of people were infected with hepatitis C, a viral infection that can cause liver disease.

Friday's report recommends further regulation of health care workers and improved communication between hospitals and the state.

But Exeter Hospital president Kevin Callahan says much of the report is false. He says the hospital investigated but was duped by a skilled con man.

Kwiatkowski has pleaded not guilty to federal drug charges. He faces trial in January.
