NIA to probe 'terrorist' Liyaqat arrest

New Delhi/Srinagar: Amid pressure from Jammu and Kashmir government, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Monday handed over the case of suspected terrorist Sayyed Liyaqat Shah to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The NIA will investigate the circumstances under which the suspected militant was arrested, reports said.

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday asked Shinde to hand over Shah's case to the NIA, amid a row over his arrest between Delhi Police and Jammu and Kashmir Police, reports said.

Shah's arrest has triggered a controversy with the Jammu and Kashmir Police claiming that they knew about the militant's return to India from Pakistan via Nepal.

Negating the claims made by the Delhi Police, the Jammu and Kashmir Police had reportedly said that Shah was returning to Kashmir to surrender.

The Delhi Police, however, on Friday said Shah was part of a group sent by Pakistan to launch terror attacks in India's national capital New Delhi around Holi to avenge the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
