Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari on Thursday warned Income Tax (I-T) Department officials saying they will have no one to protect them once his party comes to power.

He said the officials should realise that Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi and Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram will not protect them.

"Income Tax Department officials should not forget that the Congress is on its way out," Gadkari said while addressing his supporters here.

"When BJP comes to power where will you go? There will be no Sonia Gandhi or P Chidambaram to protect you," he said.

Gadkari made the comments days after I-T officials on Tuesday visited eight locations in Mumbai linked to 24 different firms that invested in or did business with the BJP leader´s Purti Group even as he maintained that the allegations of wrongdoing against him were fabricated.

Gadkari on the same day resigned from the post of BJP president amid increasing grumblings against his second term.

Subject of an anti-graft investigation that has buoyed back into national headlines over the past few days, Gadkari said that he was stepping aside since there was no consensus on his name for the top post.

Rajnath Singh was elected as the BJP president unopposed on Wednesday.
