
The unabated cold waves which continue to hit the northern part of the country took five more lives, raising the death toll in the current spell to 128.
Amidst Christmas festivities and celebrations on Sunday, the temperature in the capital dropped down to 2.6 degree Celsius, thus making it the coldest day in Delhi in past six years, whereas the temperature in the golden city of Amritsar was recorded at 1.6 degree Celsius.
At the same time, Srinagar, which attracts large number of tourists during this season, witnessed a recorded a minimum temperature of -3.3 degrees. Parts of the famous Dal Lake have already frozen but despite the intense cold, the tourist complained of very little snowfall this season.
Reports suggest that all the five deaths occurred in Uttar Pradesh. The state has, so far, already witnessed 88 deaths.
On the other hand, three more infants died due to chill in a hospital in Malda, West Bengal.
The Met department has said that cold waves will continue to persist in the North India for coming days as well.
