New Delhi, Nov 29 (IBNS) The chances of occurrence of reservoir induced seismicity at Tehri dam are minimal. Ministry of Environment & Forests had entrusted a study on Assessment of Cumulative Impact of Hydropower Projects in Alaknanda and Bhagirathi Basins up to Devprayag to the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.
The seismological network around Tehri region has been reviewed since 1994, which has provided information on the pattern of local seismicity in the vicinity of proposed hydropower projects.
The findings in the preliminary report indicate that there is no change in the pattern of local seismicity or tilting of hills within 40 km of Tehri dam.
The objectives of the study inter alia include accessing the cumulative impact of commissioned, under construction and proposed hydro power projects in Alaknanda and Bhagirathi Basins on the flow of river Ganga.
The Hydro Power Projects are considered as per the provisions of Environment Impact Assessment Notification, 2006
