The northeast has tremendous tourism potential - be it its natural beauty, rich biodiversity, wildlife or tribal culture. With the gradual return of peace and normalcy to the region, the government is promoting tourism to the area.

Recently, Guwahati hosted the first international Tourism Mart. The three-day event saw participation from 23 countries including ASEAN member countries, Bangladesh, Japan and the UK among others.

"Our lands are still virginal that is the mission of promoting tourism in Upper Assam in fact the whole Assam, we have come here and we are very happy to be here at the international," said Dr. Hiranmoni Gogoit, tour operator, Assam

A grand parade showcasing dance performances by various ethnic groups gave a glimpse into the rich culture of the region. Rural Assam was also showcased at the mart, exhibiting the way of living of various tribes like Bodos, Karbi, Mishing, Rabha and Deori.

The delegates from abroad were seen engaging in one-to-one meetings with craftsperson from the region.

After the three-day long event, delegates were taken on familiarization tours to various destinations for a first-hand feel of the region.

"This is the first stage. It is very important for us to promote ourselves at international level so that the people outside know about us. North East has great potential, not only Arunachal Pradesh, we have 8 states, we have different cultures and we can promote ourselves. This is a beginning stage. It is very good and we are happy," said Mayu, official, Arunachal Tourism Department.

With such efforts by the government, the day is not far when the Northeast will be a major tourist destination. (ANI)
