Oslo, March 22 (IANS) A Norwegian woman has been kidnapped in the Sinai desert in Egypt, the country's foreign ministry said Friday.
"We can confirm that a Norwegian citizen has been abducted in Egypt," Xinhua quoted Svein Michelsen, a spokesman for the Norwegian foreign ministry, as saying in a statement.
While travelling in a car between two tourist destinations -- Nuweiba and Dahab -- the Norwegian woman and an Israeli Arab man were stopped by gunmen suspected to be armed Bedouin tribesmen, according to the Norwegian-language newspaper Aftenposten.
An Egyptian security source told Xinhua: "Armed tribesmen intercepted the tourists' car and then forced the two tourists and their driver into their truck."
The driver was later released.
"Security authorities are currently making intensive contacts with the tribal elders to reach the abductors," the official said.
