Aizawl: Instrument Landing System (ILS), which would help planes land safely during low visibility conditions, would start functioning from Tuesday at Lengpui near here, the lone airport in Mizoram.
The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has approved the use of ILS at Lengpui airport, Lalhming Liana, the lone Rajya Sabha MP from the state and member of the consultative committee on the Ministry of Civil Aviation, told PTI today.
The ILS would help pilots landing in low visibility conditions, which, in turn, minimise flight delays and cancellations, state civil aviation officials said.
Commissioning of the ILS was delayed following damage of its equipment caused after a Cessna Caravan aircraft belonging to the North East Shuttle Service, crash landed at Lengpui on May 4 after overshooting the runway.
The ILS equipment were repaired after the crash and the state civil aviation wing officials had been waiting for the green signal from the DGCA to start its functioning, the sources said.
