Union Minister of State in PMO V Narayanasamy on Saturday said the uranium waste from the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant will not be dumped in the abandoned gold mines in Karnataka's Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) town.
"I had spoken about this matter to Central Minister K. H. Muniyappa and also discussed with senior officials of my department," Narayanasamy told reporters here.
"On behalf of the department, I strongly say that the uranium waste will not be taken there," he said.
Narayanasamy made the statement at a time when media reports said Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd had taken the decision to dump uranium waste in the defunct gold mines at KGF.
"I have spoken to the NPCIL chairman (K C Purohit) and he said there are no plans to dump nuclear waste in any place. We have not considered Kolar or any other part in Karnataka for that matter," Narayanasamy told The Times of India.
Various political parties on Friday called a bandh in Kolar Gold Fields to protest the dumping issue.
