Washington: US President Barack Obama has said he hasn't had a cigarette in years because he is scared of inciting the wrath of first lady Michelle Obama.
Obama was chatting privately with a U.N. official Monday and said he hoped the official had quit smoking. The exchange was caught on camera and aired on CNN.
The recording shows Obama is standing up after the event and asking the man next to him if he had given up smoking. When the question is returned to him, Obama, in a light-hearted tone with a smile on his lips, said: "I haven't had a cigarette in probably six years. That's because I'm scared of my wife."
Obama has acknowledged over the years struggling with tobacco use. Michelle Obama said in 2011 that her husband had finally kicked the habit. "When somebody's doing the right thing, you don't mess with them," she said.
