Obama's win cheered in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 7 (IANS) People here, including college and school students, cheered President Barack Obama's re-election Wednesday and expressed hope that he will help allay global conflicts and check economic woes.

At an election watch programme organised here on a big screen, it was a thunderous applause when the news about Obama's re-election was flashed.

The audience, comprising college and school students and professionals, watched a jubilant Obama, flanked by his wife Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia, proclaim that his re-election was neither a fate nor an accident. "You made it happen. There's a lot more work to do," he said.

The event was organised at the Asian School of Business. Students and professionals among others expressed hope that Obama's victory will help allay global conflicts and check economic woes.

One of the organisers of the event was the US consulate-general at Chennai.

At a panel discussion that followed the news, former diplomat T.P. Sreenivasan said that Obama's re-election is a reflection of the people's desire for continuity.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy during the course of his weekly meeting with the media, when asked about his opinion on Obama's victory, said: "I am not the only one that you should look for reactions, there are others here", referring to the Communist Party of India-Marxist leaders. The remark left everyone assembled laughing.
