Obama visits Myanmar; meets Suu Kyi

U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday visited Myanmar and met country's President Thein Sein and democracy movement leader and Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

Pertinently, Obama became the first sitting US President to visit Myanmar.

Obama met Sein at Yangon´s regional parliament building.

"I´ve shared with him the fact that I recognise this is just the first steps on what will be a long journey," Obama told reporters after the meeting.

"But we think a process of democratic and economic reform here in Burma that has been begun by the president is one that can lead to incredible development opportunities," he said.

Obama met Suu Kyi at her residence in Myanmar.

Praising Suu Kyi, Obama said the Nobel Laureate was ´an icon of democracy who has inspired people not just in this country but around the world´.

"Here, through so many difficult years, is where she has displayed such unbreakable courage and determination," the US President told reporters after a private meeting with Suu Kyi.

"Today marks the next step in a new chapter between the United States and Burma," he said.
