Mathura: Unable to motivate villagers to ensure cleanliness, an official here tried some 'Gandhigiri'.
During an inspection of Ambedkar village in Mat Tehsil, Chief Development Officer Ajai Shankar Pandey picked up a broom and a spade lying in front of a house and started cleaning the area as the surprised villagers watched.
A large crowd gathered and soon the youths also chipped in, carrying the waste lying at the entrance of the village in their tractor trollys.
As the area was cleaned, the villagers told the CDO that they would now charge a fine of Rs 500 from anyone throwing garbage on the road.
The Chief Development Officer said that during his last visit to the village he had told the villagers to maintain cleanliness but they did not pay any heed to it.
His request for providing some land for Samudaik Bhavan (community hall) was also ignored but now the villagers have agreed to part with the plot.
"I have done nothing special but only tried to motivate the villagers to ensure cleanliness in the village," Pandey said.
