At least one person was killed and 12 others were injured in a stampede at the Hanuman Temple in Panki near Kanpur on Tuesday, police said.

The mishap occurred when large number of devotees assembled at the temple on the occasion of ´Budhwa Mangal´ festival.

The deceased was identified as Purushottam Prajapati.

Several devotees had gathered outside the temple since last night.

The police said some devotees fainted due to heat and soon the stampede broke out.

Some eyewitnesses, however, said the stampede broke out when the police used force to control the crowd.

The injured people were taken to different hospitals in Kanpur.

Panki is a suburb in Kanpur.

As many as nine people, including eight women, were killed and many injured in a stampede at a religious ceremony at Deoghar in Jharkhand, police said Monday.

The stampede occurred at the Satsang Ashram of Anukul Chandra followers in Deoghar at the anniversary programme.

At least two had died in a stampede last week at a temple in Mathura in Uttar Pradesh.
