Panaji, Dec 6 (IBNS) Nearly 124 male prisoners lodged in Goa's oldest Aguada Central Jail will be replaced by female prisoners as the entire batch of male inmates will be shifted to Sada, South Goa and New Central Jail Colvale, North Goa in near future.
The decision was announced in a cabinet meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Francis D'Souza on Thursday.
"The Central Jail Aguada will be exclusively converted into women's prison after its renovation is complete. Women inmates share a common jail premises with the male inmates though there are separate enclosures for both," D'Souza told a press conference.
However, at present there are no female inmates in the Aguada Jail while about 30 are currently lodged in the Sada Sub Jail.
After conversion, the Aguada jail premises will be manned by lady personnel.
Mapusa Judicial Lock Up, which currently houses 54 male inmates, will accommodate only young male prisoners aged between 18-21 years. "Once these prisoners cross the age of 21 years, they will be shifted either to Sada or Colvale jail," the deputy CM added.
