Young Piyush Sangwan who turns 15 next month stole the limelight when he grabbed a 2-shot lead in the opening round of the Tata Steel Northern India Open Amateur Golf Championship, the second event of the Tata Steel Indian Amateur Golf Tour being played at the Jack Nicklaus designed Classic Golf Resort here on Tuesday.
Piyush submitted a blemish-free card of 4-under par 68 to top the leaderboard.
Veteran Manav Das and Smarth Dwivedi shared the second place at 2-under par 70 while Varoon Parmar was fourth at 1-under par 71.
Udayan Mane, Manu Gandas, Shakti Singh and Viraj Madappa were tied for the fifth place while as many as seven players - Arjun Sharma, Syed Saqib Ahmed, Simarjeet Singh, Harmohan Singh, SK Lakra, Vikram Rana and K Anirudh were tied for the ninth place at 73.
Pirush a 9th grader from American Public School made a strong start after play was delayed by more than an hour due to dense fog and fired two birdies one each on the par-3 fifth and par-4 seventh to take the turn at 2-under.
On the back nine, Piyush continued in the same vein and made back to back birdies on the 14th and 15th to finish strongly at 68 which incidentally is the best round by him at the Classic Golf Resort.
"My hitting was a bit wayward but it was mainly due to my putting that helped me go low," said the chubby-faced Piyush who made just 26 putts for the day.
