An Australian lawmaker has accused Prime Minister Julia Gillard of hypocrisy over her accusations that opposition leader Tony Abbott was a misogynist, after a derogatory Twitter attack against her by a Labor senator.

Greens Leader Christine Milne admitted Gillard undermined her own attack against Abbott as being sexist last week by protecting Speaker Peter Slipper.

According to the Australian, Milne warned Gillard that she would now be forced to stamp out sexism in her own party.

Milne accused Labor senator David Feeney of a sexist and derogatory attack after he tweeted a series of pictures of the Greens leader with captions describing her different emotional states.

"If you're going to call it out you have to call out sexism on all sides, regardless of who is responsible," Milne told Sky's Australian Agenda program.

Gillard had blasted Leader of Opposition Abbott last week, calling him a 'sexist' and a ' misogynist' in the parliament as the Coalition Government failed to have Slipper immediately sacked.

Gillard was responding to a motion put forward by Abbott to sack Slipper, who had survived a no confidence motion by one vote with key independent MPs backing his position.

Slipper was accused of sending text messages to his former staffer James Ashby, in which he made crude references to the female genitalia. (ANI)
