An Australian naval official has lost his appeal against his conviction for indecently spanking a junior female sailor.
Lieutenant John Alan Jones, 57, was sentenced to 18 months in jail and demoted from the rank of lieutenant-commander after he was found guilty in 2011 by a court martial panel of seven acts of indecency.
This included four occasions when he smacked a junior female sailor and other incidents when he told her to take off her pants, pulled down her underwear, made her lift up her top, and touched her bottom,
Lieutenant Jones appealed against the convictions during a hearing in March before the Defence Force Discipline Appeal Tribunal in Sydney.
The tribunal heard that Lieutenant Jones had been deprived of a fair trial and suffered a substantial miscarriage of justice.
In Melbourne today, a Judge said that while the appeal tribunal had quashed a conviction on one count, it had found him guilty on an alternative charge to that count.
According to the report, it sentenced him to be severely reprimanded on the alternative charge. (ANI)
